A White Christmas in Canada will be one of the most beautiful family holidays you will ever experience. This is our Family Holiday Report.
In 2016 we travelled with 2 other families to Whistler for a White Christmas, there were 6 Adults and 8 Children aged 5-12yrs.
We flew Korean Air as it offered the best prices at the time and had short transit times and flew into Vancouver.
It was snowing as we flew into Vancouver, which is quite unusual but very beautiful. Staying the first 2 nights in Vancouver allowed us all to recover, rest and buy any remaining winter clothing required.
Vancouver is a lovely city with so much to experience in Winter. Canada Place was fun with the ‘Fly Over Canada’ experience and the alley of Christmas Trees; Gas Town has lots of souvenirs and bars. Capilano Suspension Bridges is amazing in winter and has a free shuttle departing from Canada Place.
We hired cars as two families were driving onto Banff after Whistler however there are many transfer companies working between Vancouver and Whistler for the 2.5hr drive.
In Whistler we stayed at First Tracks Lodge, Creekside. They are beautiful big modern Canadian apartments with balconies; 1,2 or 3 Bedroom. There is a heated outdoor pool and spa, ski lockers, gym. First Tracks is perfect as its is 10m to the lift and kids ski school meets right at the back door.
I found a company that would bring a REAL Christmas tree into our apartment for arrival and decorate it, which smelt amazing!
Creekside is its own village as is Blackcomb and Whistler. All the hills are connected so you can ski down into any village. They have ski hire, lessons, restaurants, grocery store, wine/beer store, boutique shopping. There is a shuttle that runs between Creekside and Whistler village if you wish to dine in Whistler some nights. Everything is decorated so beautifully and really Feels like Christmas.
Two families then drove to Banff, this takes 2 days with an overnight stop in Kamloops. The roads can be icy so best to only drive in daylight hours to 4pm.
Banff is a winter wonderland – they stayed at the Fox Hotel and Suites, it is not far from town and offers big 2 bedroom apartments with ample bedding for a family of 5 and a laundry. There is a Grotto heated pool and restaurant on site. Banff in Winter offers so many activities: Thermal hot springs, Sledding down the Bow River, Dog sledding, Ice fishing, Ice Hockey on Lake Louise, Johnston Canyon Ice Walk and of course shopping and dining along their famous main street.
We travelled onto Big White, BC. for another week of skiing over New Years. Big White really is a Ski in-Ski out destination with the main town nestled half way up the mountain. The hills are not as big as Whistler but they are plentiful, wide and lovely to ski. There are lots of apartments and hotels to choose from and enough restaurants to keep us interested. You can even pre-order groceries to be delivered to your apartment before arrival!
One of the best things about Big White is the activities centre at the base of the mountain. If tired of skiing the kids can try Ice skating or ice hockey on the frozen lake, Ice climbing, skidoo riding, show shoeing and the giant ice tubing starts at 4pm.
If you have always wanted to experience a white Christmas there are great ski deals in Canada if booking before November 15th. Whistler can offer up to 50% off Lift & Lodge packages, Kids 12 and under can receive free offers with parents rental or lessons.
Planning early is the best way to book an affordable family snow holiday.
Accommodation can sell out quickly especially with the 50% off deals. Book Flights and Accommodation by March if travelling in December. The remainder of the lift, lessons, hire and other bookings can be organised around mid year.
Canada is a lovely choice for Snow holidays, there are many airline options between Australia and Canada, the dollar is about equal and their Ski hills are big and varied.
